Summary
Agnes Mata,
a middle-class suburban mother of two elderly grown sons, Ziggy and Gabe is
stuck with her husband Louie, in a monotonous routine, day in day out serving
everyone in her family who have taken her existence for granted by leaving
little or nothing to her own choices in family matters. She found herself
curious to a jigsaw puzzle of 1000 pieces among all other gifts she had
received in her birthday. It was not very late before she discovered her
passion for putting together all the wrong pieces into the right spot. Agnes,
who has always been passionate about going for college education in mathematics
but never been successful owing to her priorities for others, begins to
discover her strength in logical reasoning and gaining control over the challenges
posed by the game of puzzle. It is for her eagerness to stay involved in making
her own choices by solving new puzzles she travels to New York to find the shop
where she can explore more of similar types of puzzles. While checking out at
the billing counter inside the puzzle shop, she notices an advertisement that
leads her to meets Robert, a former champion of puzzles who is looking for a
partner to take part in the next puzzle national championship scheduled in a
month. Agnes is not comfortable with strangers generally, but with her puzzling
adventurous trips to meet Robert twice a week, gradually realizes, she has been
precisely apprehended by Robert who also admits her gift in solving puzzles in
her own unorthodox way. They fall in love out of their mutual respect and for
the ability to see countless random events in their lives taking the shape of a
perfect picture similar to the fragments of a jigsaw puzzle because at the end
of the day there are all the right choices no matter how many wrong pieces
might have been fitted into wrong places that has helped them to rediscover
their inner self.
PUZZLE is the
portrayal of the metamorphosis that takes place with the inner self of Agnes,
who has reached her early 40s without ever venturing beyond New York city which
is a faraway place from her home, with a fancy thought of paying a visit to Montreal,
her birthplace. She lives in a tight-knit immigrant community in which she was
raised by her widowed father. When she discovers the monotony of 50 years of
happy marriage from her widowed aunt Emily she realizes she
is not alone in the league. Agnes decides to step out of her naïve bubble to
express herself with confidence and not turning back on her acumen with heart
out assertiveness. If this is the because of the game of puzzle or intriguing
conversations with Robert or maybe both, we leave this to you, the audience, to
decide the true spirit that lights up the self-esteem in Agnes Mata.
